Q1. What are you currently working on?
As Global Lead of Quality Strategy & Performance, I work closely with manufacturing sites, quality functions, and digital transformation teams across the Factory of the Future programme. My focus is on advancing Quality of the Future, with a particular emphasis on laboratories and digital transformation.
Our mission is to build a connected quality ecosystem where data empowers faster and better decisions, enabling organisations to become more proactive, accelerate product release, ensure the quality of medicinal products, and minimise risks and errors. Ultimately, we aim to transform quality from a reactive function into a strategic enabler of business performance and patient value.
Q2. What will you be focusing on in your talk?
My talk focuses on developing and implementing strategies for connected, data-driven laboratories. Starting with a multidimensional maturity assessment, it explores how organisations can translate insights into value-creation priorities aligned with business ambitions and operational challenges. Rather than optimising laboratories in isolation, the emphasis is on connecting laboratory ecosystems with the broader value chain to enable real-time data visibility, stronger digital foundations, and targeted capability development. The ultimate objective is to reduce lead times, improve analytical efficiency, increase automation, and enable faster, more informed predictive decision-making.
Q3. What are the biggest barriers to building a truly connected, data-driven CMC laboratory?
One of the biggest challenges is that laboratories are often viewed and managed as isolated ecosystems rather than as part of an end-to-end value chain.
Many organisations focus on optimising activities within the laboratory, while limited attention is given to connecting data and processes across Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Development, and R&D. This fragmentation creates data silos and limits the ability to generate actionable insights.
Other common barriers include insufficient focus on change management, lack of robust data foundations required for AI readiness, and limited investment in digital capability building. Technology alone is not enough; organisations must also invest in people, processes, and culture to unlock the full value of digital transformation.
Q4. How often should organisations identify new capability gaps on their Lab of the Future journey?
Capability gaps should be identified continuously throughout the transformation journey.
As organisations progress in their digital maturity, new technologies, opportunities, and business requirements emerge. The capabilities needed at the beginning of a digital transformation are often very different from those required to sustain and scale it.
Regular assessment, prioritisation, and targeted digital upskilling are therefore essential. Organisations should continuously evaluate not only technology adoption but also data readiness, change management effectiveness, and workforce capabilities to ensure that people evolve alongside the transformation.
Q5. Which digital investments and changes have delivered the fastest value in QC and CMC?
In my experience, the fastest value often comes from combining digital investments with process redesign rather than implementing technology alone.
Examples include paperless data capture, electronic laboratory notebooks, process digitalisation, instrument connectivity, and targeted automation where it creates clear business value. These investments improve data visibility, reduce manual effort, minimise errors, and enable faster decision making and issue resolution.
The key is not to automate everything, but to understand where automation and digitalisation can address the most critical business challenges and create measurable value.
Looking ahead, next-generation laboratories will increasingly leverage AI-driven data orchestration, autonomous robotics, and real-time review-by-exception workflows to move from descriptive reporting towards predictive and proactive operations.
Q6. What capabilities will define the next generation of QC and CMC laboratories?
The next generation of QC laboratories will be defined by the combination of connected data, intelligent automation, and digitally enabled talent.
Future laboratories will leverage seamless data integration across laboratory, manufacturing, supply chain, and development processes. AI and advanced analytics will enable predictive quality management and faster decision making, while automation and robotics will reduce manual activities and improve efficiency.
Equally important will be workforce capabilities. Future laboratories will require professionals who can effectively work with data, digital technologies, and AI-enabled tools. Organisations that successfully combine technology, data, processes, and people will be best positioned to realise the vision of a truly connected and predictive laboratory.
Q7. What does the ‘Lab of the Future’ look like to you?
To me, the Lab of the Future is a highly connected, data-driven ecosystem where information flows seamlessly across functions and decisions are supported by real-time insights.
Routine activities are increasingly automated, scientists can focus on higher-value work, and quality processes become more predictive rather than reactive. Data is captured once, used many times, and is readily available to support operational, scientific, and business decisions.
Most importantly, the Lab of the Future is not defined by technology alone. It is an environment where digital tools, harmonised processes, and skilled people work together to accelerate innovation, improve quality, and deliver value to patients faster.
Q8. Why did you choose to speak at the Lab of the Future Europe Congress?
The Lab of the Future Europe Congress is an excellent platform that brings together experts from science, CMC, quality, technology, and solution providers to discuss how digital transformation can shape the future of laboratories.
I attended the event last year and was impressed by the openness of the discussions and the opportunity to exchange experiences across organisations facing similar challenges. These conversations help accelerate learning, inspire new ideas, and create valuable collaborations.
I'm excited to contribute to the dialogue by sharing experiences from our transformation journey and learning from others who are helping shape the next generation of laboratories.
